HP And Why They Suck

31-Jul-05

So, HP are going to stop selling iPods? I'd love to see the rational. However long ago it was that they started selling iPods, the tech community in general gave out a sigh of resignation, that the company with the tagline "invent" had finally succumbed to the almighty dollar above all else. As it turns out, worse was to come..

I have nothing much more to say on the sacking of Alan Kay, that wasn't covered here along with everywhere else on the internet.

What I find incredible is that by ditching the iPod .. it almost looks like they are ready to start inventing again .. but .. they just sacked their research department? I would bet they've simply found a cheaper manufacturer of pseudo-iPods.

I can't wait to see what they announce in a month or two when the hubbub dies down a little.

My personal beleif here is that we'll see a range of not-quite-as-good-as-iPods-but-dammit-they're-cheap manufactured and designed by someone else, and rebadged HP. It'll look almost like they're doing something innovative but without any of the actual value of it. Great. Another company, down the toilet.

Site Update

30-Jul-05

Well, I didnt intend to just post site news again today, but it's Saturday and I really want to get an update in before I head out. And I need to test the updating system somehow, right?

So here's an update. I've changed the color scheme a little. I'm still trying to find some kind of contrasting colors to spice it up a little. I've border-ized the design, so it looks like every other blog on the planet. I'm not sure if thats a great thing or not.

The future is the web - Are we there yet? All this web2.0 talk is exciting, but nine-tenths of my work-day is done in networked applications already.

The sky is falling! - well, actually, asteroids might be slamming into the planet. Same thing really.

On Constructing Blogging Software

29-Jul-05

This is the second blogging software I've tried to write, in as many months. I guess I'm being picky, but when I see the great stuff that Jason Kottke has been doing with Movable Type it really makes me jealous. Kottke has been a complete inspiration in terms of where the future of blogging lies, and I feel his site design is a massive part of it.

His site design allows for multiple types of blogging to co-exist in a very happy manner. He can post just a link (well, with a little description) or a review of a movie or book, or an actual traditional "blog" post about something that's been on his mind. And MT handles it well and lays out the content no matter what. I love that, but I hate the overhead of having to run MySQL just to serve some freaking pages.

Now, when you're at the kottke level of blogging, then running MySQL may be fine, but I just dont see how a reasonably full-feature database can be relevant to a fairly basic blog application. It seems to me that most software designers just use databases these days as a reasonably secure filesystem with standard operators. My gut feeling is that unless you're dealing with thousands upon thousands of items, databases are a complete waste of time.

With all that ramble in mind, welcome to LinkenBlog .. a new attempt to make my own personal blogging experience a little less hectic. All filesystem based, all the time. I think this one could work out pretty well.
